Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to create a formal training protocol for psychiatric nurses at the local psychiatric hospital to enhance their well-being and peer recognition through shame resilience and compassionate leadership curriculum.

Background: Psychiatric nurses face high levels of stress and burnout due to exposure to patients in crisis. While psychiatric hospitals prioritize holistic care for patients, similar resources for staff are limited. This project addresses this gap by focusing on the mental well-being of psychiatric nurses and adding useful skills.

Methodology: A shame resilience and compassionate leadership training intervention, based on Brene Brown’s curriculum, was conducted bi-weekly for two months. Pre- and post-intervention surveys using validated tools, including the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Professional Quality of Life Scale, measured changes in resilience, burnout, and peer recognition.

Results: The intervention is expected to result in improved resilience scores and fifty percent increase in peer-to-peer recognition rates, enhancing staff satisfaction and team dynamics. Ultimately, improving patient outcomes and job satisfaction.

Implications: This project highlights the importance of structured support for psychiatric nurses to improve their well-being, retention, and patient care outcomes.
