Georg Bartisch’s Ophthalmodouleia is the first comprehensive ophthalmological textbook printed in the German language. Its striking woodcut illustrations depict the anatomy of the eye alongside detailed scenes of Renaissance eye surgery. Some images contain layered paper flaps that allow readers to simulate the dissection of the eye and surrounding structures. These innovative visual devices transformed the book into an interactive guide to ocular anatomy and surgical practice.
