Emmeline J. Renis started working at the League as one of two nurses in 1920. She was fresh out of Mercy Central School of Nursing in Grand Rapids, MI and had just arrived in Houston. When she started, the TB mortality rate in Houston was 204 per 100,000 persons. By 1953 the rate had dropped to 22 per 100,000 persons.
