Children at Risk
CHILDREN AT RISK began in the fall of 1989 when a group of child advocates met to discuss the lack of documentation on the status of children and the absence of strong public policy support for Houston’s children. It is a non-partisan research and advocacy organization dedicated to addressing the root causes of poor public policies affecting children.
Since then, the organization has produced eleven major publications focusing on critical children’s issues, published biennially. The latest edition of Growing Up In Houston: Assessing the Quality of Life of Our Children: 2022-2023, is based on over 130 quality of life indicators and includes background information, data, trends, and recommendations on children’s issues. Over twenty years, CHILDREN AT RISK has evolved from an organization researching the multitude of obstacles our children face, to one that also drives macro-level change to better the future of our state and nation through community education, collaborative action, evidence-based public policy, and advocating for our youth at the local and state level.
