Abstract
Bridging Evidence with Community: Five Routes to Diabetes Prevention in Latino Adults
Background: This project used the Eightfold Path policy analysis approach to identify and recommend an evidence-based diabetes prevention program (DPP) for Latino adults in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). The aim was to reduce diabetes prevalence by selecting an intervention that is culturally appropriate and effective for this population.
Methodology: The Eightfold Path policy analysis approach guided this project. A comprehensive literature review identified diabetes prevention programs (DPPs) tailored for Latino adults, and the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) was used to assess study quality. Five DPPs were selected for evaluation: a soccer-based program, a text-based intervention, Lawrence Latino, Promotora-Led, and Vida Sana. Limitations included a scarcity of recent studies and small sample sizes in the projects reviewed.
Results: All five DPPs were evaluated and presented to the collaborating organization. Based on cultural relevance and effectiveness, the Lawrence Latino DPP was recommended as the most suitable for the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). This program achieved statistically significant reductions in weight, body mass index, and HbA1c through a holistic approach combining individual and group culturally tailored interventions. It also demonstrated a high retention rate of 86%.
Implications for practice: Sustaining this program will depend on the partnering organization’s resources and commitment. Implementation has the potential to promote healthier lifestyles among Latino adults in the RGV and reduce the prevalence of diabetes.
