Abstract

Evaluating what works: A comparison of five diabetes prevention programs for Latino children

Background: Children in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) are at increased risk of diabetes due to limited access to effective, culturally appropriate prevention programs. Existing programs are often time-intensive, require transportation, and lack cultural relevance, reducing participation and impacting outcomes. This project aimed to evaluate diabetes prevention programs (DPPs) in the literature and identify five that may benefit children in the RGV by reducing diabetes risk.

Methodology: The Eightfold Path policy analysis approach guided this project. A literature review identified DPPs for children, and the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) was used to assess study quality. Limitations included difficulty finding child-specific DPPs and variation in outcome measures across programs. Five programs were selected as most relevant: Circuit Training DPP, Modified CDC DPP, Jordan After-School DPP, Bright Bodies DPP, and YMCA DPP.

Result: Five programs were presented to the collaborating organization. Among these, the YMCA DPP was identified as the best fit for the RGV due to participant improvements in fasting insulin and weight, cost-effectiveness, a 71% retention rate, and cultural appropriateness for Latino children.

Implications for Practice: The YMCA DPP can support healthier lifestyles in children by promoting physical activity and improved nutrition. Program sustainability depends on the organization’s ability to implement it effectively with appropriate staffing and resources.
