Abstract
PURPOSE The goal for this project is to increase code blue education and knowledge for staff registered nurses during new employee orientation at a psychiatric teaching hospital. An educational video will be created consisting of code blue procedures. The goal of this video is to better educate registered nurses on code blue medical emergencies before their time on the unit floor begins.
BACKGROUND A code blue or rapid response team is critical for patients to receive proper medical care. The education of nurses has been shown to increase the knowledge and understanding of medical emergency teams and increase the utilization of the rapid response system. The psychiatric teaching hospital this project takes place at does not have any educational programs in place for code blue emergencies
METHODOLOGY The method of this education will be an educational video to supplement the code blue drills already in place at the psychiatric teaching hospital. The Project will utilize the PDSA Cycle.
RESULTS Around 40% of the nurses showed a gain in knowledge. While the other 60% showed no change.
60% of nurses were confident in their abilities to perform well in an emergency prior to watching the video. After watching the video, the number of staff members who were confident in their abilities rose to 90%. Every nurse in the study felt their stress levels decreased after watching the educational video.
IMPLICATIONS
Adding the educational video increased staff knowledge and decreased stress levels. Continuation of the education will lead to increased staff competency, confidence, and ultimately better patient outcomes.
