Abstract

Archivists and Special Collections Librarians, Tara Sims and Kelsey Koym, at the Texas Medical Center Library (McGovern Historical Center), have recently embarked on an investigation to identify, test, and quarantine some of its most intriguing—and potentially hazardous—items: beautiful, vibrant Victorian-era books bound in materials possibly dyed with heavy metals, such as arsenic, lead, and mercury.
