Author Biographical Info

Joanne Greenberg was born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 24, 1932. She graduated from American University in Washington D.C where she majored in anthropology and literature. Greenberg worked for a time as an elementary school teacher and was an adjunct instructor of anthropology at Colorado School of Mines where she also taught courses in creative writing. She was also a volunteer with the Lookout Mountain Fire Department and Highland Rescue Team.

She is best known for her published work as an author of novels and short stories. Her 1964 novel, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, is a semi-autobiographical account of her psychiatric treatment at Chestnut Lodge in Rockville, Maryland where she was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Greenberg was treated from 1948 to 1951 by the famous psychoanalyst Dr. Frieda Fromm-Reichmann. At the beginning of Greenberg’s treatment, Dr. Fromm-Reichmann consulted with Dr. Hilde Bruch, who had more experience with adolescent patients. Greenberg maintained a personal relationship with Dr. Bruch until Bruch’s death in 1984.
