Author Guidelines

Content

Your op-ed should contain an argument supported by evidence, with emphasis on why your subject matters and a call to action for all readers. Op-eds should be focused and can reference any topic of interest to the author, including responses to events or issues in the news and the associated economic, social, and political impact. Authors should write about a topic that interests them and provide a clear thesis that communicates an opinion to a broad audience, emphasizes the relevance of the issue to readers, and provides a solution or avenue for readers to address the issue in their own lives.

Style

Submissions should be limited to 800 words. The op-ed must be typewritten, double-spaced, using standard single-columned pages with a minimum of 1-inch margins on all four edges. Type 11 Arial font must be used. Articles should be submitted to the Nexus website using the Submit Article tab.

References

Authors should use the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition) for all references. References should be listed in a reference section at the end of the op-ed. In text citations should be used in Chicago format for all sources that are directly quoted or paraphrased.

Plagiarism

To encourage creativity and integrity, the Nexus Board of Editors defines "plagiarism" as the use of intellectual property without the appropriate provision of credit to the original author or source. Acknowledgments are to be made clearly in Chicago-style citation, and any use of direct text requires explicit quotation marks.

Review process

The editing process will consist of a double-blind system, where authors will be anonymous to editors and vice versa. Collected submissions will be checked for plagiarism and then enter the review process where editors will provide comments which will be returned to the author. Authors will then have one week to edit their piece based on the comments and then resubmit for final approval by the journal’s faculty advisor.

Using the Nexus Website

Submissions will be collected on the Nexus website. When navigating the website, use the 'Submit Article' button on the left sidebar. Authors must accept the submission agreement before proceeding to create an account in order to submit the op-ed. Once this is done, authors will be asked for additional authors and to upload the manuscript. Authors will need to provide a title, a short title, optional keywords separated by commas, relevant disciplines, and an abstract. Documents can be uploaded as a word file or pdf. Authors are limited to one submission per issue.
