Abstract
Children do not immigrate; they flee. I have used this simple phrase during the recent years that I have been thrust into the debate related to the migration of children alone or with families across the southern border of the United States.
Author Biography
Dr. Stein is a practicing pediatrician with specialization in critical care. He has been delivering bedside care for the past 42 years in Houston, Texas. In addition of being past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics he is a founding member of the Section of Critical Care, Task force on minorities and the Committee on Membership of the American Academy of Pediatrics. As a member of the technical advisors of the Pan American Health Organization for the Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI), he has been extremely active in advocacy for children in impoverished environments at the global level. Dr. Stein has received 3 honorary Doctorates and is Honorary Member of 14 International Medical Societies and has received more than 40 honors and awards for his educational contributions. He is the recipient of the Clifford Grulee Award presented by the AAP "for extraordinary service and commitment to the cause of children” and the Robertson Presidential award for excellence in education presented by Baylor College of Medicine.
